The Eternal Studio. Artists from the Low Countries in Nineteenth‐Century Italy

A. Pelgrom and E. Geudeker (eds.) The Eternal Studio. Artists from the Low Countries in Nineteenth‐Century Italy, RKD Studies, The Hague (RKD) 2026, https://the-eternal-studio.rkdstudies.nl/, ISBN: 978-90-71929-32-8.

This digital publication, part of the 'RKD Studies' series of the RKD Netherlands Institute for Art History, present the results of a workshop held in Rome in 2019, organised by Eva Geudeker (RKD) and Asker Pelgrom. Its aim was to chart current research, projects, questions and ideas concerning artists from the Low Countries active in Italy during the 'long' nineteenth century.

Among other things, it contains contributions on the relation between art and politics, social mobility, networks, studio practices, exhibitions, the art market and their influence on the position and (self‐)image of artists. The visual artists discussed here are painters, sculptors, architects, photographers and possibly others, from the area nowadays known as the Netherlands and Belgium.

The volume holds essays by Davy Depelchin, Christine Dupont, Laura Fanti, Dominique Marechal, Fien Messens, Malika M’rani Alaoui and Asker Pelgrom.

The digital environment of the RKD, of which the publication is a part, made it possible to richly illustrate the contributions and to provide numerous links to the RKD databases and library.
